When You’re Out There is a series of photographs, video works and collage that considers the success and failure of our shared attempts to faithfully represent nature. While I am self-conscious, critical and curious about this compulsion, I too am seduced by all the tropes of nature art. Who isn’t charmed by waterfalls, sunsets and rainbows? I also can’t resist wanting to capture and “take home” nature, a craving we see manifest in multitude on Flickr, Instagram, etc. But the ubiquity and ordinariness of so much nature art motivates me to poke fun at our unquenchable need for more. It is this struggle and the futility of the attempt to recreate nature that feeds the works in this series.
